Hearty Turkey Chili

Alright, so I know I started complaining about the cold weather probably sometime around mid-October.  But now it’s really cold.  As in farmers in Florida start getting worried cold.  So what does this mean, aside from lots and lots of unproductive whining?  Time to eat chili!  This is another one of my mom’s specialties and something I’ve been eating my whole life.  It’s tried and true and especially wonderful now that the temps have dropped for the long haul.

What you need:

And here’s what you do:

You’re feeling warmer already, right?

Let’s recap:

  • 1 lb. ground turkey (any ground meat will do)
  • 1 16oz. can whole or crushed tomatoes
  • 1 8oz. can tomato sauce
  • 1 16oz. can kidney beans, drained
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Hot sauce to taste (optional)

Directions:  Brown meat and drain grease. Add tomatoes, tomato sauce, and seasonings. Cover and simmer for 45 minutes. Add kidney beans, onion, and bell pepper. Cover and simmer for 25 more minutes.  Serve with your favorite toppings — avocado is pictured and it’s surprisingly delicious!
